JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Florida Department of Transportation still hasn't decided whether to open parts of the bridge to traffic. Meanwhile, crews suffered a small setback in their effort to lift a portion of the bridge back to its original position.
"The first attempt that they made, they were able to get it about two inches," said State Rep. Lake Ray, who has observed the repairs on the bridge. "But they needed to get it to the 4-inch level to get it completely restored."
Ray believes the focus should be on getting the whole bridge back, and not just the two lanes.
"I believe that the citizens across the community would rather see us keep those lanes closed and finish this thing in two weeks then maybe four weeks in alternating those lanes to make the progress," Ray said.
At this point, officials still aim to re-open the bridge by the end of October.
