JACKSONVILLE, Fla -- A truck driver hit by a Jacksonville Sheriff's Office cruiser has died from his injuries.

FHP has identified the driver as Alain Martin, 33, from Hialeah near Miami.

Florida Highway Patrol says Martin parked his truck on the side of Eastport Road on the Northside and got out of the vehicle. He walked behind the truck and stepped into traffic. At that same time, Patrolman Chuck Reagor with JSO was coming down Eastport Road responding to an accident call.

FHP confirms Reagor had his lights on but aren't sure about his siren when he struck the Martin in the road. FHP says Reagor did not see Martin and they don't think he saw the cruiser coming either.

According to Chief Hackney, Reagor is lucky to walk away from the incident uninjured. After striking the truck driver, he veered his cruiser off the road and into the fence. Hackney says a part of that fence came through the cruiser's windshield and into the back seat. If it had been a few inches over, Hackney says Reagor would have been seriously injured.

Reagor is a veteran on the force with more than 20 years in the department.

The investigation is ongoing and the road is back open.

I bet the Officer was looking down at his computer like the majority of the other Officers I pass on the streets. Stepped into traffic. Try to pass that one onto his family.

This is so sad. I think it's really irritating how you report that the driver "stepped into traffic". Like he would just...........step into traffic. I personally know one of the eye-witnesses and that's not exactly how it happened. And even if the driver DID walk out from behind his truck, why wouldn't he be able to have room there? Why was the officer THAT close to his truck in the first place? And why were his sirens not on if he was going that fast? I hope they really DO investigate it further.
