JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Marie Yates sits in her southside home just one day after losing her daughter Nancy. According to police, 68-year-old Nancy Wingard was hit and killed while crossing University Boulevard Wednesday morning.
"It's heartbreaking. It's always heartbreaking when you lose a member of your family," says Wingard's mother, Marie Yates.
Yates says she just saw her daughter last Friday. She never dreamed it would be the last time she'd see her alive.
"We were mother and daughter but we were friends too. We were like sisters."
She says Wingard, a native of Jacksonville, was a mother of 4 and grandmother of 8. She was a beautician at one time and loved caring for others.
"She loves to take care of babies and old people and was always a good loving daughter to me."
Now this 88-year-old great-grandmother is left trying to cope with the loss of her oldest child.
"She's a lively, lovely, beautiful person."
Police say Wingard was jay-walking across University Boulevard. The driver of the car that hit her is not facing charges.
