JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — ( Johns Creek police say they are investigating a false report of a triple shooting Wednesday as a case of "swatting."

According to police, a call was transferred from Alpharetta Police Department 911 Center to Johns Creek police at 4:30 p.m. from a man who said that he had shot a man, woman and child inside a home in the Country Club of the South community. The caller also said he was holding a woman hostage and was demanding $30,000 ransom.

Multiple units were sent to the home on Carlisle Lane and armed officers set up a perimeter in the area.

Officers called the home, but no one answered. Officers then used their patrol cars' PA system telling the residents inside to come to the front door. A short time later, a woman came out with two young children. Officers quickly rushed the three to a safe area.

The woman, who was later identified as a nanny, told officers she was very confused about the heavy police presence and that she and the children were uninjured.

Officers entered the home and determined there was no one else inside and that the call was a hoax.

"I think it's a very distasteful type of situation to waste the resources of police and fire departments," Lt. Nick Curry of the Johns Creek Police Department.

Police said it can be difficult to track down the person behind the call.

Police say "swatting" is a growing trend across the country. The goal of "swatting" is meant to prompt a SWAT or similar police response to a home.

And so now, thanks to the media telling everyone about this, we will have untold numbers of "copy cat" incidents. The police have got to love the media.
