Police: Former worker stole $200k from American Red Cross
GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- The Gainesville Police Department believes that a former worker of the North-Central Florida chapter of the American Red Cross stole more than $200,000 from the aide agency.
In June of this year local Red Cross employees discovered several case files that potentially involved fraudulent transactions all related to Casey Marie Schmelz, police say.
According to a press release, Schmelz would log into the debit card system meant for disaster survivors and retrieve cash from ATMs.
Detective King told Action News that fellow American Red Cross employees were extremely disappointed by Shmelz's actions.
"These people were like her family," said King. "She was working for a company that is designed to help others. She lost sight of that mission with her criminal behavior."
It is now up to the State Attorney's office to press formal charges against the former employee.
