ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. -- Two men remain behind bars on suspicion of kidnapping and murder in connection with a body found in a burning car in Flagler Estates.
The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office arrested Justin Adam Boyles, 24, and Charles Danny Massey, 38. Both men are from Palm Coast.
They are charged with killing 54-year-old Edward Scott Mullener, of Palm Coast.
Massey and Justin Boyles were arrested while they were already behind bars for other charges. Police say they beat then burned Mullener in the trunk of his own Cadillac last month. Sheriff David Shoar tells Action News that Mullener suffered a slow, painful death.
"This man was not killed immediately. He was beaten, he was brought back to, they forced him to drink beer and burned him with a cigarette," said Shoar.
Police believe the violence erupted over a woman named Antoinette Heart. Police say Heart was involved in a love triangle with Boyles and Mullener. They say evidence lead them to the two suspects and to Heart.
"She could very well be facing charges, and we're still evaluating that," said Shoar. Police say Heart and another female they have questioned are cooperating with them. No charges have been brought against them so far.
The medical examiner ruled the cause of death as homicidal violence by undetermined means. The manner of death is listed as homicide.
Mullener's family was able to identify the body.
"We're happy that they were caught and that the family can begin to mourn now," said relative Danielle Mullener in a statement to Action News. "We're thankful that the detectives were able to gather information so diligently in this case and work so quickly."
