JACKSONVILLE, Fla.-- The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said the number of murders is up so far this year compared to last year.

Jackie Sutherland now believes crime can really happen anywhere.

"I never expected it to happen here," said Sutherland.

Sutherland lives in the Southside neighborhood where Joshua A. Heinz was killed.

Police say Heinz died after being hit by a baseball bat during a fight about barbecue meat.

Action News did some checking and found out Heinz's murder is just one of seven murders since Jan. 1. That's up from five this time last year.

The JSO crime report also shows 55 aggravated assault crimes. They're in all parts of town and all have different situations. Not all of those crimes have been solved.
Police are asking anyone with information to contact CrimeStoppers.

Action News asked JSO for a comment on the slight increase. A spokesperson said they hold news conferences on murder arrests and that when FDLE releases the official year end numbers, JSO comment will be available.
