Police identify victim killed in attempted robbery
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office is investigating a shooting after an attempted robbery on the Northside that left one man dead early Saturday.
JSO homicide detectives were called to a scene at the 1000 block of W. 13th Street at 4:50 a.m. in response to the shooting that happened around 3:30 a.m.
Police say an off-duty officer was flagged down by a man who told him he was involved in a gun battle after an attempted armed robbery. The man told the officer he believed he shot the robber.
JSO says officers showed up to the intersection of W. 13th and Thames Avenue where they found a man dead with a gunshot wound behind a home. Police say a handgun was found lying next to the deceased man.
Police on Tuesday identified the shooting victim as 19-year-old Timmie Johnson.
Investigators say a witness who was sitting in a car with the man who flagged down the officer told police a man approached the vehicle with a gun and demanded money. The witness says he got out of the car and fled. He later heard numerous gunshots during the altercation.
JSO says the man who flagged down the off-duty officer had a concealed weapons permit. He turned over his weapon to police.
