JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- It's normally Maria Torres' day off, but Saturday she spent 10 hours patrolling part of I-295. "This is my highway. I am responsible for everybody's safety," she said.
She is one of hundreds of extra badges that will be on Florida roads looking for drunken drivers for the Labor Day holiday. It's all a part of the "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign. "They can't maintain within their lane. They swerve," said Torres.
According to the National Highway Safety Administration, there are 161 DUI arrests made every hour. "Drivers continue to do it, and it's our job to get them off the road," said Torres.
The highway administration says half of all deadly DUI crashes happen between the hours of 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. "A lot of people normally say 'I can do it, I can make it.' But somebody is going to end up getting hurt," said Torres. She hopes she can stop those drivers before they stop you or your loved ones from getting home.
