JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. -- The Jacksonville Beach Police Department isn't taking last week's massive Memorial Day beach brawl lightly. And Action News has learned police are now taking advantage of an old tool to stay on guard.
The police lift tower is not new for Jax Beach PD, but it will see more action.
A massive fight broke out on Memorial Day, and was all caught on camera. The tower was not in use at the time, but in light of all the attention this fight is getting, police didn't hesitate pulling it out to use this past Saturday and Sunday.
"Anytime we have large crowds out here at the beach we feel like an added security measure needs to be taken, we deploy it and use it," said Sgt. Tommy Crumley.
Crumley said they'll have it up the next few weekends, and he said it made a big difference this past weekend.
"It definitely adds a visual presence," he said. "It's kind of hard to miss, but it definitely provides our officers a good view of what is going on an overall view of the crowd."
Beachgoers said the tower is something they wouldn't mind seeing every day.
"We need that you know because if they would have had it out here that day run maybe that would have never happened," Maurice Polite told Action News.
City Councilman Phil Vogelsang said it's a smart tool to start using regularly. He said this tower will send a message that people are welcome to visit the beach, but they must behave.
"Might as well have it there and show the police presence. It shows that we're there watching and hopefully deter anything from happening," Vogelsang said.
Police also say you'll be seeing heavy police presence out there for the next few weeks as well.
