ORANGE PARK, Fla. -- Julia Herringdine has been charged with one count of grand theft, schemes to defraud and using falsified records after a bank notified J.L. Wilkenson Elementary School an account was overdraft.

The school pieced together that Herringdine forged a signature which prompted Detective Herb Pittman to dig deeper.

“We believe we can prove that $57,000 was taken by Miss Herringdine,” said Pittman.

Clay County parent Ginger Russell said she’s disgusted to learn someone was stealing from children.

“That’s taking away from their education. I’m sending my children to school to learn, to be able to use these resources, to better their education and to better their future and she’s taking that away from them,” said Russell.

In her resignation letter, Herringdine claims she’s done poor paperwork and budgeting. Investigators say it’s not the work of a few accidents.

“She has definitely manipulated documentation. She’s not admitting to taking the money, but she’s the only person who had access to that money, those documents, and the deposits,” said Pittman.

Herringdine resigned during the investigation so school officials never had to take action to terminate her. As a result of the investigation, the Clay County school system told us they’re now searching for a full-time internal auditor.
