ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- Police are looking for new leads in a cold case murder from 1974.

Police say Mrs. Frances Bemis went out on her nightly walk through her neighborhood on November 3, 1974.

Police found her body in an empty field near 46 Marine Street the next day.

She died from blunt force trauma.

Witnesses told police they heard screams the night Bemis went out for her walk. One neighbor also heard a sound as if someone was being choked.

Police searched the area and did not find anything unusual.

Bemis owned the Maria Sanchez Apartment Complex on Marine Street. She was involved with the Humane Society and the Art Association. Bemis also spoke for the humane treatment of carriage horses.
