JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- One person is dead following a police shooting on Atlantic Boulevard.

The incident began as a report of an armed suspect inside the store of Academy Sports and Outdoors, which is just west of Kernan Boulevard.

Police say a man walked into the store, carrying a gun.  Employees tried to get him to leave, but he refused. He also refused to hand over his gun.

Police say the man, along with a woman, eventually bought ammunition and then left the store.  A store manager told police he allowed them to buy ammunition to help hurry the man out of the store.

"We are under the impression that there may have been some intent to purchase ammunition because that's the aisle they went to and that's the purchase that they did actually complete," said Chief Tom Hackney with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

The pair drove off in a white pickup truck.

Responding officers spotted the pickup truck leaving the store parking lot.  Officers ordered the driver to stop.

Police say the man, sitting in the passenger seat, pointed a gun out the back window.

A police officer opened fire, hitting the suspect and the truck. The man died at the scene.

Police say they found guns in the pickup truck.

The commotion was witnessed by an Action News photographer.  Dave Hickox said he heard several gunshots while driving down Atlantic Boulevard. He pulled around and saw police with their guns drawn on a truck on the side of the road.

"There was about eight cops out with their guns drawn on the vehicle," said Hickox. "I heard an officer say 'get him out of the vehicle' and she started screaming 'you can't, he's shot in the neck."

Hickox says police took a female driver into custody and the man was dead in the pickup truck with a sheet over his body.

No officers were hurt in the shooting.

Police have not identified the suspect or the female driver.

JSO says it will hold a news conference in the morning to release more information.

The officer who fired his weapon is on administrative leave, which is standard procedure in police shootings.

Someone please explain to me how a officer following a pick-up truck can fire a handgun out of his window while he's driving, and hit and kill the passenger in a pick up in front of him with one shot while it is also moving. This cop must be some kind of a sharp shooter super cop. We need to ship him to Iraq and put his skills to work.
