JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Police have located a man they say started a gun battle with police at a southside apartment complex late Wednesday night.
It started at the intersection of Beach and San Pablo, where just after 10 p.m., police were called because a man was found suffering from a gun shot wound. That man was taken to the hospital with life threatning injuries.
During the investigation, an officer noticed a car nearby, that was believed to be involved in a separate previous incident. The car was driving away, so the officer followed.
Six miles later, the car pulled into the Timberwood Trace Apartment complex near Atlantic and Kernan Blvd. That's where the passenger jumped out and pointed a gun at police.
"There was an exchange of gunfire between police and the suspect," said JSO Public Information Officer Melissa Bujeda. "At this time police are not injured and the suspect is still outstanding."
Police weren't sure if the suspect was hit because he fled, but told Action News the driver was interviewed and led them to believe both incidents are connected, and that the suspect may also be responsible for shooting the man at the original crime scene.
"We believe the shooting took place inside the vehicle and the suspect somehow left the victims body at San Pablo and Beach, before we followed them to this location."
According to JSO, as of 10:20 AM, there are no outstanding suspects in this case.
They will provide an update to the media at 2 PM Thursday. Stay with Action News for continuing coverage.
