ATLANTIC BEACH, Fla. -- The cold was especially bitter for the Oaks of Atlantic Beach community after 101 homes lost power Tuesday morning.

Brenda Jandreau has lived in the neighborhood for 13 years. She was all layered up as if she was leaving her house, but instead she bundled up to stay inside.

"We've had power outages but it's usually on within 30 minutes, this is ridiculous," said Jandreau.

As temperatures dipped below freezing Tuesday morning, Jandreau's electricity along with dozens of her neighbors' shut down. That forced them to find alternative ways to stay warm.

"I just honkered down under my blankets and dealt with it until this morning," said neighbor Steve Downes.

JEA's outage map first began to light up right around its predicted peak hour between 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 a.m.

"It was nice and toasty last night when we went to bed, woke up this morning and we were freezing," said Jandreau.

For some communities like, Oaks of Atlantic Beach, fixing the problem required crews to replace the transformer. According to JEA crews on site, the transformed they took out was too old, combine that with sub freezing temperatures and it just couldn't handle the overload.

Neighbors in this community have one message for the polar vortex delivering the frigid temperatures that caused this mess in the first place.

"Go away," said Downes.

According to JEA, its megawatt reading topped out at 2,852, missing the record by only 373 set back in 2010.
