JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- To increase the chances of winning tonight's massive Powerball jackpot, many of us pooled our money with our co-workers, bought tickets as a group with the hopes of sharing that $550 million.
But we've seen it before. Things can get ugly if an office wins and someone feels left out. To prevent that from happening, local attorney Lee Lockett says you should take a few simple precautions.
First, make sure there's a list of contributors.
"Writing your name down on a sheet of paper, with the date of the drawing, the date of your contribution and the amount is probably going to be sufficient enough in most cases," he said.
Second, get photocopies of the tickets.
"You're going to want copies of not only the front of the ticket that has the winning numbers, you're also going to want copies of the back of the ticket, because there are serial numbers unique to that ticket that proves identification."
Finally, designate an office pool manager.
Lockett suggests, "You want to have an office pool manager because you want to have someone in your office who is going to sort out the confusion, sort out the mistakes, and be the go to person."
These are simple steps you can take now to avoid lawsuits later.
