Problematic bridge turns 60 years old
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A celebration took place Saturday in commemoration of Mathews Bridge’s importance to the once booming Arlington community.Hundreds turned out for a re-staged dedication as well as a community car show.
The bridge was constructed in 1953 and named after John E. Mathews, a former Chief Justice of the Florida Supreme Court.
A 2007 Florida Department of Transportation study found the bridge functionally obsolete and structurally deficient.
A year has not been set for the bridge’s replacement.
The bridge is currently undergoing a nearly $23 million repair project.
The project is estimated to be completed in summer 2014.
