Professor says eyeball may belong to big squid
MIAMI, Fla. -- Word that a giant eyeball washed up on a South Florida beach has created a buzz on the Internet and in the marine biology community. A beachgoer found the softball-sized eyeball Wednesday in Pompano Beach.
Professor Rob Martin of FSCJ believes it might belong to a giant sea creature like a shark, octopus or - most likely - a squid.
Martin says the beast that was once the owner of the eye was probably 20 to 25 feet long, but a DNA test is needed to confirm its host.
Florida wildlife officials have sent it to a research facility in St. Petersburg for testing.
