JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Publix issued a voluntary recall of 10 ounce bags of hearts of romaine lettuce because they may be contaminated with listeria. The company says it was contacted by the Food and Drug Administration after a sample was tested.

Locally, the bags were sold from September 8 - 20, 2012 at stores in Duval, St. Johns, Clay, Flagler, Nassau and Putnam Counties. The UPC found on the back right-hand corner of the package is 41415 03886.

Eating foods contaminated with listeria can cause symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women. No illnesses have been reported.

Publix says the lettuce has been pulled from the shelves. Customers who bought the lettuce can return it to their local store for a refund. Anyone with questions can contact Publix's Customer Care Center at 1-800-242-1227 or by clicking here to visit the company's website.
