Pumpkin Hill Preserve fire affecting local students
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A 400 acre fire at Pumpkin Hill Preserve in North Jacksonville has roads closed, and prevented 35 Duval County School students from making it home on their buses on Tuesday.
Students from First Coast High School, Oceanway Middle and New Berlin Elementary were all taken to New Berlin Elementary after firefighters turned their buses around.
Parents have been advised to pick up their children there.
Marsha Oliver with the Duval County School System tells Action News that a previously scheduled after-school program is open until 6 p.m.
At that time, school district officials will meet with Duval County Emergency Operations team to determine how to transport any children that are still at the school.
Oliver says staff will be on hand until each child is properly transported. She says some parents may be at home, but unable to leave their homes and get to the school.
