JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The cost of renaming Forrest High School to Westside Senior High will cost taxpayers about $350,000, according to early estimates from the Duval County School Board.

The district approved the name change earlier this month for the school named after Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest who reportedly had ties to the Ku Klux Klan.

The school's mascot is also changing.  Students voted earlier this week to go from Rebels to Wolverines.

The school colors will stay the same.  The changes take effect July 1.

Westside High School: New Mascot: "Wolverines. A carnivorous, solitary mammal of the WEASEL family of northern forests that is BLACKish with a light BROWN band on each side of the body." I just can't stop laughing! You can't make this stuff up! Everyone knows the WEASEL is a sneaky, mean and dangerous animal with a nasty disposition that can not be trusted, domesticated or trained and definitely is not a "team player." I wonder what they were thinking when they decided to make themselves the laughing stock (Here comes the WEASELS!)of Jacksonville's public schools. In keeping with their grand scheme of things, the students of Westside High School missed the perfect opportunity to select BLACK & BROWN for their school colors which would have more than one symbolic meaning to all concerned. Whoops! On second thought, I think the name personifies the core values of the new Westside High School. Excellent Choice! Way To Go! Party On!

but the best part is rather than spend it on improving scores of students, they'll still be just as ignorant as before the change, they'll just look "impotent" !!!

seeing as some of the signs are nothing more than fancy oversized bumper stickers with peel on ability, the cost seems outrageous... why don't the crack mothers do the sewing of new names on band & team uniforms ??? in between trips to the corner crack market with our tax dollars ???

There is no reason on earth that this charade should cost the taxpayers this much money. We need new government leaders.

More than a quarter million dollars to change a name in the interest of political correctness. Would that money not be better spent paying the homeless to perform part time work improving neighborhoods and themselves? Maybe even upgrading drains in some parts of the county? What a shame....
