NASSAU COUNTY, Fla. -- A school resource officer, accused of engaging in sexual acts with a minor, appeared before a judge Monday morning.

Alan Manchester is accused of sexual battery and lewd and lascivious behavior with a minor.

The 47-year-old is a school resource officer at Yulee High School.

Action News spoke with Barbara Johns, the property manager where Manchester recently lived. She's known the officer for years and said he was a model tenant.

"He was great as a courtesy officer," said Johns. "He locked up my pool at night. He patrolled my property to make sure nothing was going on."

The sex charges stem from an incident 10 years ago. The Nassau County Sheriff's Office states that the incident happened before Manchester started working at Yulee High.

Johns told Action News reporter Ryan Smith that her grandchildren attend the school and said Manchester was well-respected among the student body.

"It is surprising. It's a shock to a lot of people, a lot of young people especially," said Johns.

Manchester has been suspended without pay. The sheriff's office is conducting an internal investigation.

The case is now being prosecuted by the State Attorney's Office.
