Jacksonville, FLA. - Among the beautiful oak trees and Spanish moss the Club Continental sits right along the Saint Johns River in Orange Park. The club website boasts fine dining, fresh seafood and prime meats at a premier waterfront location... but this week the state health inspector found 19 violations here 13 of them were critical.

Top round meat was found in the kitchen four days after it should have been thrown out, the inspector found a moldy tomato, an employee was seen touching corn with their bare hands and the hand wash sink wasn't accessible at all times. You can see the state report here.

When we asked to see the manager, Sheldon Harris came out right away. We asked him for a response to Club Continental landing at the top of the critical violations list this week.

Harris says, "We wouldn't do as well as we do here if we ignored problems." He went on to say he considers all the violations minor and that they were all taken care of right away.

When we asked to see inside the kitchen Harris said, "I can't right now. I would love to but I'm busy right now. I didn't expect you and if you had called and made an appointment I would have been all ready for you."

We asked one more time to see inside the kitchen. Harris answered back quickly, "Um... no. I'm busy right now. You caught me at a bad time."

Here are the other restaurants at the top of the list this week with critical violations.

At Whitey's Fish Camp there were 13 critical violations including live flies in the kitchen. You can see the state report here.

At Wendy's on Mayport Crossing Road in Atlantic Beach there were 13 critical violations including an employee handling raw burgers and then going back to the grill without properly washing hands. You can see the state report here.

As far as Wendy's goes, there are just 2 franchisees owning/running all the Wendy's locations. I can't speak for both, but one of them (that owns around 14 stores) pays as little as possible, and often moves hourly employees into salaried positions so that they may be worked more hours for about the same pay. That particular franchisee goes out of its way to hire immigrants from Europe, even if they can barely speak English. That's because the franchisee's supervisor is from Bosnia, and apparently has a tacit distaste of Americans. Most service personnel seem apathetic and many are simply not in good moods. The food is usually good, but you should ask them to "make it fresh" because the chicken or beef may be served barely warm and tastes old. The same franchisee routinely fires managers and, later on, hires them back at smaller salaries. So now you can see how much frustration the employees have, and thus their reluctance to keep the restaurants clean and safe. I saw a large cockroach in one of them recently - it was a slow day (only 4 customers in the dining room) and I discretely told the clerk. She smiled and said she would take care of it. 10 minutes later, the cockroach was still scampering around, so I stomped on it, and told the same clerk where the dead body was. Again, no response.
