JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Huddle House is located on State Road 200 in Yulee. This location is at the top of the high priority list this week with 27 violations, 9 of them critical. When we stopped by the lunch crowd was already gone. The restaurant was empty except for two workers who told us they didn't want to be on camera. They did however ask us to wait while they called the manager.

The state health inspector found more than two dozen violations here including:

Bacon, sausage, ground beef, tomatoes, pancake batter, peppers and cheese held at hazardous temperatures
The dishwasher wasn't working which is a repeat violation
There were cracked and broken egg shells and a stop sale was issued by the inspector
The cook was seen touching food with his bare hands - that is a repeat violation and a warning was issued

While we were waiting to speak to the manager we looked up and noticed these rusted and dirty vents over the dining area but the kitchen looked clean. The Huddle House manager, Barbara, agreed to speak to us over the phone.

She had these two words for her customers, "No comment."

Other restaurants at the top of the high priority list this week include:

Quick Chinese on Baymeadows Road in Jacksonville had nine high priority violations including non-food grade containers being used to store egg-rolls.

At Cotten's Bar B Que on Main Street in Jacksonville there were seven high priority violations including live small flying insects in the food prep area.

The following restaurants had zero violations and earn our clean plate award:

Winn Dixie Prop & Casualty - Jacksonville
Gastro Gnome Food Truck - Jacksonville
Salsas Mexican Restaurant - Philips Hwy, Jacksonville
Popeyes Chicken & Biscuits - Kings Road, Jacksonville
Food Tron 15, 11 - Kings Road, Jacksonville

On the night of Wednesday, December 11, 2013, I ate at Huddle House in Yulee, Nassau County, Florida. The whole restaurant was hazy and smelled of grease and that smelled saturated my clothes. I ended up with a very upset stomach all day starting the next morning very early. They had served me cool room temperature chili that Wednesday night and the crackers they gave me with it were hard as a rock and very stale. My friend's coffee was cold. The onion rings were greasy and terrible tasting. I highly suspect this place gave me food poisoning that night. I didn't know about this article until after the fact and that is too bad because it would have saved me from going there and ending up sick the next few days. Also, I don't recommend the popcorn (it is many times STALE and they highly scrimp on the butter) at the MOVIE THEATER in FERNANDINA BEACH. I'm almost positive that they use the same popcorn from a night or two before. At the end of the night on more than one occasion I have seen them closing the concession stand early (they close two hours early a lot which many times denies customers refills on their food) and putting all the popcorn in a big trash bag and sealing it (most likely for later use). They have also refilled my popcorn from the trash bag and one night they couldn't give me any butter for it. For the price of popcorn I think we are entitled it fresh and as much butter as we want. I rarely see them popping any new popcorn and when they do I think they mix it with the old popcorn from earlier that day and/or a day or two before. Should I contact the news media and health department about these matters? I sincerely do not want others to come down with food poisoning and strongly believe customers deserve the best quality and quantity and freshness of anything they purchase. I highly suspect food poisoning is what I had last week. I'm perfectly willing to answer any questions anyone has in these matters and welcome assistance and news coverage of it.

Over the years, this place has tumbled down hill. I have to say even though many old co-workers and I don't get along, this place was MUCH nicer and had a better reputation when we all worked there! Too bad things aren't like they used to be.
