JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - This week the state received a complaint about Stan's Sandwiches on Phillips Highway in Jacksonville. T
he caller said the septic tank was overflowing and sewage was coming into the building behind the cash counter and that customers were exposed to all the sewage in the building. A state inspector immediately went to check it out. Here's what we found in an emergency state report filed that day.
A temporary closure of Stan's Sandwiches was ordered by the inspector who noted seeing sewage on the ground from a failed septic system.
Fluid from the septic area seeping into the side of the restaurant resulting in peeling baseboards.
A rug just inside the door of the restaurant was completely saturated with sewage water. We tried calling the owner of Stan's Sandwiches, Romal Kassees, but didn't get any answer.
A state spokesperson sent us this statement about the restaurant. When the inspector returned to perform a call back inspection the next day, the inspector observed the operator in the process of removing all equipment including coolers, cooking equipment, chairs, tables and counter tops. additionally, all signage was removed and there was a sign announcing permanent closure. - Beth Frady, DBPR
