JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Friends of 49-year-old Richard Hollis say he was an amazing man who truly cared about others. "He was just such a wonderful guy and it's really sad that something to that effect happened to a guy like Richard," says friend Scott Marabell.
Hollis was driving to Raleigh, North Carolina Monday morning to visit his brother. He pulled off of I-95 in Georgia to change a flat tire. Investigators say he was shot and killed. When they found him, the only thing missing was his wallet. "When I found out yesterday my stomach was in my throat," says Marabell.
Scott Marabell was one of Hollis' close friends. He says, "Richard would've given the guy his car, he would've taken his credit card and said lets go buy what ever you want to buy. his phone. If the guy asked for it, he would've given it to him. Say here's the shirt off my back, whatever you need, take it."
Hollis was also a big supporter of Wolfson High School baseball. his son Jordan was on the team. "If it was new batting cages we had them, if it was we needed money to go on a road trip, he had it. He was just a wonderful guy and did so much for our program," says Marabell.
Hollis retired a month ago from his executive position at Jacksonville Bubba Burgers. Marabell says he was thoroughly enjoying this new chapter of life. "He picked up a few more hobbies. One of them I hear was cooking. And that's hard to believe because he couldn't cook one of those Bubba Burgers he used to make," he says.
Marabell says he will never forget his friend. "He was one of the most giving and down to earth guys I ever met in my life and he's going to be dearly missed," he says.
