JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office is mourning the loss of one of their own.
Retired Sgt. Charles Wilson Jr., 68, died after being hit by a car while walking in his San Marco neighborhood.
"He's going to leave a void here, no doubt about it," said Kenneth Palmer, Business Agent at the Fraternal Order of Police.
Both he and Wilson started working with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office back in the late 60s.
"We ended up on the same watch, working the same hours. I've always had a ton of respect for Charles," said Palmer.
Wilson retired from the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office in 2004 after 36 years of service. Most recently, he returned to work as a bailiff sergeant until he retired in January.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Wilson was struck as he trying to cross Hendricks Avenue at River Oaks Road.
He was transported to UF & Shands Jacksonville where he died.
"He's one of those guys in our agency that I've never heard anybody have anything negative to say," said Palmer.
According to the police report, charges against the driver are pending.
