MAYPORT, Fla. -- Motorists wishing to cross the St. Johns River near Mayport will have to wait longer to cross the waterway via the ferry.

The St. Johns River ferry was originally thought to open by around the end of the year, but a Facebook post by the ferry group suggests it will be at least Jan. 8 until the boat is operational again.

The boat was taken out of service to undergo routine inspections and maintenance, as required by the United States Coast Guard.

The ferry has been in operation since 1948 and is one of the last remaining public ferries in the state.
