JACKSONVILLE, Fla -- A portion of 118th Street is barricaded off on the westside Monday after the side of the roadway broke off and fell into a drainage ditch.

About 50 yards of 118th Street is closed between Firestone and Ricker Roads.

Neighbors tell Action News as the rain fell Sunday night, the drainage ditch raised and water was actually washing over the road. While the water receded Monday, it already took its toll, making the ground too weak to support the road.

Those living nearby say they are lucky. Several kids were playing out on the road in the water Sunday night. And they say if a car had driven on the edge of the road prior to it breaking off, the car would have likely wound up in the drainage ditch as well.

City crews have been out to assess the issue. Neighbors say city crews have not cleared out the drainage ditch in quite some time and think that may be the reason it flooded Sunday night.

Maybe the neighbors should get together and clean out their ditches! Maintaining your property, and if necessary areas adjacent to it is pretty much just common sense. If you have a ditch along your property then get out there and clean it up! Don't wait for the city to take care of your property!
