JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A San Mateo neighborhood was shut down during a SWAT standoff.

It all happened in the 11000 block of Elaine Drive. The area was blocked off and according to JSO, homes nearby were evacuated.

Police, negotiators, and the SWAT team were called out after a 40-year-old man living in the home was making suicidal threats. A family member who was home with him called police about 10:45 a.m.

Jacksonville Sheriff's Officers say the man had a weapon in the home with him, and he was threatening to hurt himself.

Neighbors described what they saw. Myrtice Shirley says, "I just walked out to get my mail and I saw that it was blocked off, everything, the streets and all. Then all of a sudden, the SWAT team came and I could hear them on the loud speaker."

JSO Lt. Shawn McCormick says, "They have a methodical process that they go through. They went through that process and that process was successful in getting a peaceful resolution and that he just gave up a few minutes ago."

The man has been transfered to a mental institution for evaluation.  No criminal charges have been filed.
