JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office has reopened several city blocks surrounding Central Riverside Elementary, but a suspect that was in an hours-long standoff with police is nowhere to be found. A Duval County Schools spokesperson says classes will resume as usual.
Officer Shannon Hartley with JSO says the SWAT team was originally called out at midnight to a home on the 2600 block of Gilmore Street, right next to Central Riverside Elementary.
Police were trying to serve arrest warrants on two suspects in that home. Shawn Curtis Robinson was wanted for multiple traffic violations, Deshawn Lamar Brown was wanted for aggravated battery.
According to the JSO, around 5 a.m. three tear gas canisters were fired into the residence.
Shortly after 6 a.m. Hartley told Action News that Robinson surrendered to police, but JSO believed Brown was still inside the home on Gilmore Street.
At 6:45 a.m. JSO told Action News that Brown had somehow slipped away from the home and was nowhere to be found. Hartley said police did not believe Brown was a danger to the community and that police were lifting their lockdown of the area. Hartley also said classes at Central Riverside Elementary would resume as normally scheduled.
In a statement released at 7 a.m., Wendy Lehockey with Duval County Public Schools said, "The district was advised by JSO that there was a potentially violent situation in a resident home near Central Riverside Elementary. In order to ensure the safety of students , District staff were working on contingency plans to communicate with parents regarding the possible relocation of students if the situation were not resolved prior to the opening of school. [DCPS] and JSO have indicated that the scene is clear and there are no suspects in the neighborhood. We plan to open school as usual and will have district and cluster staff on site to assist if needed."
Action News also learned that the principal of Lee High School, which is near the standoff scene, ordered a lockdown of that campus. Lehockey says Lee's principal ordered the lockdown out of extreme caution in reaction to the standoff near Central Riverside Elementary. That order has since been lifted. Classes at Lee High School and Central Riverside Elementary will both begin as normally scheduled.
No injuries are being reported at this time.
