JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Hundreds of volunteers across North Florida hit the pavement outside retail stores Saturday in an effort to raise funds for the Salvation Army's Red Kettle Christmas Campaign.

According to the organization, the campaign helps provide food, toys, shelter and clothes to 6 million people during the holiday season and helps millions more recover from disasters nationwide.

The fact that the holiday season is the shortest ever -- with just 26 days between Thanksgiving and Christmas -- has charitable organizations trying to make up for lost time.

The Salvation Army's bell-ringing campaign runs through Christmas Eve.
