JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and groups like the Salvation Army are calling on the community for more donations before the holiday.
William Jenkins didn't always need the Salvation Army. But he recently fell on some hard times and now relies on the organization for a daily meal.
"It's real important because you have a lot of families and people who don't have anything and this is a good place for them to come and eat and enjoy a meal."
The Salvation Army is in the home stretch preparing to feed more than 1,000 needy families for Thanksgiving.
The stuffing and side items are packed and prepared to be handed out. But the Salvation Army is still in desperate demand for more turkeys.
"We've received about 675 turkeys so we still need a couple hundred more turkeys. Our distribution day is next Tuesday and of course we use the remainder of the turkeys for our Thanksgiving meal on Thanksgiving Day where we feed the public," said social services director, Paul Stasi.
Stasi says they will fill their dining room at least four times Thursday. But the clock is ticking. They need more than 300 birds brought in by this weekend. But that can only happen with your help.
"I'm always amazed by the generosity of the people of Jacksonville," said Stasi.
It's that generosity, Jenkins says, that defines our giving community.
"Let's you know that people still care. They still care about the people who are disadvantaged and don't have."
You can drop off a turkey or monetary donation to the Salvation Army 24 hours a day at 900 W. Adams St. in downtown Jacksonville.
