DAYTON, Ohio (WHIO) -- Sam's Club is opening its membership-only doors to military personnel and their families as long as commissaries on military bases remain closed.

The company announced Thursday, a day after commissaries were closed because of a shutdown in governmental services, that it will waive membership requirements at locations near military bases for those who "heavily depend on commissaries for low-cost groceries and everyday needs."

"Sam's Club understands that helping communities meet their needs during uncertain times is the first step to restoring normalcy," according to the release.

The offer is valid until the U.S. Government resumes domestic commissary operations, according to the release.
