JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla.-- The Hurricane season is winding down -- but it's not over yet.
"Hopefully it veers off and doesn't create too many problems," Debbie Lefebvre said.
"Sandy" is expected to roar near our coast in the coming days, and bring dangerous conditions with it.
"People always thinks it's sharks, whatever. Rip currents kill more people in Florida then anything else," Capt. Thomas Wright said.
Wright with Jax Beach Ocean Rescue says rip currents are nothing to play with. Add to that the tens of thousands of additional beachgoers in town for the Georgia-Florida game ... there's a very real concern.
"If I could convey one message to out-of-towners, there's limited lifeguards on the beach. Probably won't have towers on the beach until this weekend, and it's very rough. Stay in knee-deep water or less," he continued.
Not too many people were in the water Wednesday but the ones who were were very cautious.
"We been watching the radar on TV," Gary Lefebvre said.
Erica McDuffey says she keeps a close eye on her 9-year-old and 4-year-old.
"They're not allowed out without their older sister. They don't go. He won't go when the waves are above his waist," she explained.
Wright says that's the right idea. It only takes seconds to get swept out to sea, especially if you aren't a strong swimmer. Until the storm passes, everyone is encouraged to stay alert.
"We'll probably be flying red flags the rest of the week."
