JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- It's the sound that makes you cringe. We can't live without our smartphones, but that doesn't keep us from damaging them on a regular basis.
Carla Aldridge with CPR Cell Phone Repair shop on the Southside has seen a lot of damaged phones. In order to keep your phone off her operating table, she says you've got to get a case.
"The covers are expensive, but what about the phones?" said Aldridge, "The phones are $600 to $900 computers."
So, which is the best case for your phone?
Carla says the one word you need to remember when purchasing a case is "bumper." But water can be a phone killer. "Especially here in Jacksonville, 30% of our business is water damage to devices," said Aldridge.
There are new cases that now effectively protect smartphones fully submerged in several feet of water.
Some of the cases designed for fashion offer little to no significant protection at all.
So bottom line, spend a little cash to protect that smartphone. Also remember, a case can protect your phone, but that doesn't mean accidents won't happen. "If they drop, they are going to shatter," said Aldridge, "I mean, they are all vulnerable."
Men's Fitness magazine conducted its own smartphone cover study and came up with two more winners for the most durable cases.
Testers called the Case-Mate Phantom case, "solid as a rock." It retails for about $50. The other top rated is the Otterbox Armor Series. The company claims this case can withstand a 20 foot drop and a half-hour under 10 feet of water.
