ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla.-- When storms rolled in Tuesday morning, St. Johns and Flagler county schools were on alert. School leaders monitored developing systems and stayed in close contact with the experts.
"We call the National Weather Service, and we coordinate directly with the folks who are watching this," Transportation Director Joe Purvis said.
At the transportation level, a lot went on behind the scenes. Employees had to track each bus and determine who was in the path of danger.
White boards made the process easy, but after the tornado warning went out, it was all hands on deck.
"You worry about what you may not know and you worry about what you may miss, so we've put a great deal of effort into it, a lot of coordination," Purvis continued.
In Flagler County, three schools, including Matanzas High, had their students duck and cover in the hallways.
Both school districts made it through another scare and can go home knowing they did their all to protect local school kids.
"What we're planning to do right now is just pull our normal operations," Purvis said.
