JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- It was the kind of situation the teachers and staff at Seacoast Christian Academy only experience during a practice. But Friday afternoon was no drill.
"At first you get rush, but then you immediately go into your procedures," said Pre-Kindergarten Director, Cheryl Kubowicz.
A total of 135 children were put on lockdown as police looked for three shooters who injured a woman. The shooting happened just a few feet away in the Regency Square Mall. "No unauthorized personal was allowed into the building. No one was allowed in or out," said Kubowicz.
"I have to get my baby," said a grandmother named Joanna.
Parents and grandparents had to show picture ID before any child was released from the building. "It's a scary situation, and I have two kids here," said mother, Chris Young.
"Normally they bring them outside here, but today we have to go in," said father, Jason Huffman.
Children and teens at the Global Outreach Charter Academy are also taught here. But the staff there says nothing will change at either school until police give them the all clear. "The entire building is on lock down," said Kubowicz.
Police say the woman in the mall was shot in the arm, but she is expected to be okay. Anyone with any information that can help police with this case can call Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS.
