ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- A scooter driver was seriously injured late Friday along U.S. 1 after being involved in a wrong-way crash.

St. Johns County Sheriff's Office spokesman Kevin Kelshaw tells Action News the scooter was traveling southbound in a northbound lane of the highway when the man was forced to swerve because of on-coming traffic.

A pick-up driver traveling northbound attempted to avoid the man on the scooter by swerving left into the median. The driver of the scooter was struck by the truck.

The driver of the scooter was flown to Shands Jacksonville with serious injuries. Police say he does not have a valid driver's license.  The case is being actively investigated as a DUI by the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office.

I forgot to add, since he was driving a scooter down the wrong way, without a valid license, and INTOXICATED? He also needs to get sober before he's kills someone or himself, he obviously has a drinking problem.

Good grief...PAY ATTENTION when you ride your scooters...It is so easy to MISTAKE an on ramp from an off ramp...because you are so close to the ground you are NOT WATCHING THE SIGNS UP ABOVE EYE LEVEL. Hope he makes it and takes a bus from now on if he's not licensed.
