ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- The sounds of progress can be heard up and down Avenida Menendez.
Crews are building a new seawall in front of the original and a walkway to go between them.
But Action News has learned the city is getting complaints about the narrow sidewalk and potentially dangerous conditions.
"We came down the sidewalk on the other side and had to help her down the walk to get out in traffic to go down," tourist Cliff Sharpe said.
Action News cameras caught images of people forced to walk in the street and a baby stroller that had to be carried off the boardwalk.
"Plus, you have a curve and coming around the curve, if a car is going any excess speed, even if the speed limit, it's going to be extremely dangerous for pedestrians," Arlene Sharpe said.
We took those concerns straight to the city to get some answers.
"It has been quite a challenge to be able to protect the construction area, allow folks room to work, as well as maintain access to the businesses. The contractor is responsible for the site. he is responsible for maintaining construction banners and signage," Public Works Director Martha Graham said.
The city tells us it's meeting frequently with the construction company -- C and D Construction -- to work out the kinks.
The project is expected to be finished by June but until then, leaders are asking for lots of patience.
"We have to go through the pains to get some gains," Graham said.
