Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel meets with furloughed workers at NAS Jax
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel is spending the day at Naval Air Station Jacksonville. While he is on base, he will tour several manufacturing hangars then meet with civilian employees on base being furloughed due to budget cuts.
The furloughs started this week at NAS Jax. All of the base's 2,700 civilian workers are being forced to take one day a week off without pay through the end of September. Many workers are frustrated that equates to a 20-percent reduction in pay.
During Hagel's visit he will sit in on a town hall discussion with 100 civilian furloughed workers, a dozen dozen sailors and a few local members of congress.
Action News has learned from NAS Jax officials not all furloughed civilians will get the opportunity to sit in on the town hall because of space. The largest air conditioned space was secured, but it only accommodates a little over 100 people.
