JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Sen. Marco Rubio is again in the spotlight after being selected to give the GOP response to President Obama's State of the Union address.
According to the chairman of the Republican Party of Florida, Lenny Curry, the fact that Marco Rubio will be delivering the speech is not only exciting for the senator but for the state, too.
Curry has known Rubio well before his rise to the top, back when he first ran for senator.
"When he was the underdog he came to Jacksonville and I had a little reception for him and I think there were ten people there, so that was a couple of years ago my how things have changed," said Curry.
The reason for that is simple, according to Curry, Rubio doesn't just communicate with people he connects with them.
"He is able to get the message across," said Curry.
The Republican party needs just that, especially when it comes to the Hispanic community.
Next week Rubio will also deliver his speech in Spanish.
According to Curry, this is a good step but more still needs to be done.
"We got to follow up with engaging in communities spending time in communities getting to know Puerto Ricans, getting to know Cubans, getting to African-Americans across the board," said Curry.
Time magazine recently featured Rubio on its cover under the title "The Republican Savior: How Marco Rubio became the new voice of the GOP."
The senator made one thing clear via Twitter today: "there is only one savior, and it is not me #Jesus"
"Marco Rubio is a good man and he's going to be a great man. I'll follow on his tweet, Marco Rubio is not the savior," said Curry.
Curry said aside from Rubio, former Governor Jeb Bush will be another strong Republican presidential candidate coming out of Florida in 2016.
