JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- US Senator Bill Nelson, D-FL, was in town Monday talking to students about the importance of voter rights.

Nelson was a guest speaker at Florida State College at Jacksonville's Constitution Day panel, a discussion on voter rights and whether your vote is secure.

In the packed room, was FSCJ sophomore Kefee Caldwell.

"It was very eye opening," said Caldwell.

Nelson spoke specifically about voter suppression and recent restrictions to register voters. Afterwards, he spoke only to Action News cameras about some of the big issues facing our area, including the nuclear carrier.

"The nuclear carrier is on track. The Secretary of the Navy has reaffirmed that," Nelson said.

He also brought up the amphibious group coming to Mayport in 2013.

When we asked if that will bring more jobs to this area Nelson said, "Absolutely. The more ships, the more sailors, the more families, the more repair, the more jobs."

But it was the message to not only register, but register and vote that Caldwell took away.

"Your voice will never get heard if you don't vote," said Caldwell.

The event was not open to the public, just students and faculty at FSCJ.

Nelson is currently locked in a competitive race with US Rep. Connie Mack.

The deadline to register to vote in the upcoming November election is October 9.

"Fathom the hypocrisy of a government that requires every citizen to prove they are insured... but not everyone must prove they are a citizen." Now add this, "Many of those who refuse, or are unable, to prove they are citizens will receive free insurance paid for by those who are forced to buy insurance because they are citizens." Think about it when you vote in November!

Nelson is WAY past his experation date. Of course he wants illegal's to vote, it's the only way he or Obama can win. He gave us Obamacare, that's enough right there for me to vote for Mack. It's time for Nelson to get a REAL JOB, he has lived off the taxpayers for way too long. He passed a bill that he did not read that turned out to be the biggest tax increase on the American people in history. Besides, "Fight organized crime...re-elect no one"
