ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. -- Florida Highway Patrol says a stretch of I-95 in back open after a series of crashes. The closures impacted the Southbound lanes just north of International Golf Parkway and I-95 Southbound near County Road 210.

The Florida Highway Patrol says at 5 a.m. a car rear-ended a semi carrying hazardous chemicals, leaving the car disabled in the middle of the road. The female driver of the car exited the car and was standing on the shoulder of the Interstate when a second car swerved to avoid the crash and hit the woman.

Troopers say another approaching semi then slammed into the car, which was still in the middle of the Interstate.

The woman who was hit by the car was flown by helicopter to Orange Park Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

Shortly after 6 a.m., another crash happened at the same location. A car rear-ended another semi. No injuries were reported in relation to that crash.

A third major crash took place near mile marker 327, not far from County Road 210 on I-95 Southbound.

FHP also reports numerous other minor crashes with no injuries as a result of onlookers and congestion following the two original crashes.

The Florida Highway Patrol is expect to have the scene cleared by 10 a.m.

They suggest using US-1 as an alternate route.

How does not one but two drivers not see an eighteen wheeler in front of them, this astounds me.Do you not look well ahead while driving,or just in front of your vehicle. And if you do have an accident and are able then get away from it,well off the shoulder and into the grass, this was tragic and shouldn't of happened.I won't even stop in the emergency lane and I've told my family this,if you have to pull over, then pull past the emergency lane and into the grass, as far as possible, I have seen people texting, talking, putting on makeup, and even holding a bowl of cereal in one hand, a spoon in the other while driving. These people will run over you, so get away from the traffic.People be careful and pay attention, weather your willing to admitt it or not, accidents dont just happen,we cause them.If there weren't people then there would be no accidents. So be safe and pay attention. The life you save may be your own (and maybe mine or someone I love)
