ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. -- The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office wants to do more to help the aging population.

The Sheriff's Office is reaching out to Cathy Brown, the former executive director of St. Johns County's Council on Aging.

Brown will work to identify needs in the community and locate resources for long-term issues.

The Bureau of Economic and Business Research estimated 33 percent of the county's population will be over the age of 60 by the year 2020.

The sheriff wants to be proactive now.

"Law enforcement has long responded to social issues that cannot be addressed through the criminal justice system and not every community problem requires a policing solution," said Sheriff David Shoar.
