JSO identifies shoplifting suspect who drove off overpass

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office identified the shoplifting suspect killed in a crash following a police chase as Phillip Bryant, 30.

Police say Bryant was reported for stealing items from the Walmart at the River City Market Place on Thursday. Police responded to the scene, passed Bryan going south on Main Street and a chase ensued.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office says Bryant was driving in a reckless manner, including running a red light. Officer realized the chase was getting dangerous and called it off.

Bryant continued south on Main and tried to take the Clark Road Overpass. Investigators say he lost control, crashed through the guardrail and landed on the grassy shoulder below.

Bryant was pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing. Anyone who may have witnesses the crash is urged to call the JSO Traffic Homicide Unite at 630-0500.
