ATLANTIC BEACH, Fla. -- A shrimp boat captain was arrested for running his boat aground in Atlantic Beach in and swimming away from the scene.

In late August, the Atlantic Beach Police were called to the coast after reports that a boat had come ashore. According to police, the boat washed up after its nets got stuck in the propeller.

Two men were on board, but when officials arrived Kenneth Troy Thomas, the captain, jumped in the water and swam away. Police and Coast Guard searched for hours but were unable to find him.

Hours later, Thomas' family contacted police and said that he made it home safely. At the time it was not clear why he jumped overboard but police believed that alcohol was a significant factor in the accident.

On September 6th, Thomas, 27, was taken into custody and charged with Boating Under the Influence, Leaving the Scene of a Boating Accident, Breach of Peace, Public Disturbance and Resisting an Officer Without Violence.

He is currently being held at the Duval County Jail and his next court hearing is September 16th.
