JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Local businesses are getting a boost. It's Small Business Saturday, a time businesses say they get a lot more foot traffic.
The cash register has been busy all day at the Olive clothing store in San Marco as shoppers search for their perfect holiday gift.
"I haven't even started, this is my first day shopping," said Lori Dolson.
But for shoppers like Dolson, it wasn't just about making a purchase. She said her goal is to support small businesses.
"Probably going to do all small business shopping this year, that was my plan," said Dolson.
Small Business Saturday is a national event that encourages shoppers to shop local this holiday season -- something owners of local businesses like Olive appreciate.
Morgan Sandlin, an Olive sales associate, said, "It's just nice to be able to support all of these businesses, like these businesses throughout San Marco -- no one wants them to go away, like, we don't want the big corporations to take over."
But Olive is here to stay, the owner told Action News; this year they doubled their sales compared to last year's.
"It's your neighborhood, you want to keep everything in your neighborhood going well and it does help the economic situation with small businesses," said Sandlin.
Shoppers said that's exactly why they come out.
Alicia Weaver said, "Usually we're at home doing something with family but we thought it would be fun to come out today and support."
