JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Fires continue to be an issue in and around northeast Florida, so smoke is still in the air again today. And when that happens, concerns rise about homes, property and even lung function.
Ten-year-old Paige Charron was shopping with her parents Sunday night, just blocks from the latest fire off of Roosevelt Boulevard. She said, so far, the worst day for her was one day at school.
"We had dismissal one day, and it was terrible. You literally smell some of the smoke," Paige said.
There have been very few days over the past several weeks that we've gotten a break from the smoke in the air. And that raises health concerns, especially when children are involved. And because children's lungs are still developing, before the semester let out for summer fun, schools were taking necessary precautions.
"One day we were at P.E., and they said we couldn't go outside and play kickball because the smoke was so bad," said Paige.
That concern is compounded even further when the child has a pre-existing health issues.
Vivian Whitman said the smoke bothers her daughter's allergies.
"I am concerned, of course. When it comes to allergies for my daughter," Vivian said. "And us? If we run outside, it just bothers me."
And several people we spoke with echoed that sentiment. They said the smoke didn't really bother them, but they are just sick of it and want it to end.
There was one small fire today ... Roosevelt Blvd and 120th street - just 2 acres burned there. Five fires started Saturday, mostly in Duval and Nassau counties, the largest of which was 11 acres. Crews are currently fighting a large wildfire in Bradford County. The smoke around Jacksonville Sunday is believed to be from that fire.
