Somer Thompson's memory honored with park dedication
ORANGE PARK, Fla. -- A community gathered to honor the memory of an Orange Park girl who vanished and was later found dead.
Somer Thompson disappeared from her school in 2009. She was found days later in a Georgia landfill.
Officials dedicated a park in her honor Friday. The one-acre piece of land is at the corner of Gano and Debarry Avenues. The city is calling the site a "passive neighborhood retreat."
Somer was seven years old when she disappeared. Jarred Harrel has been charged in her murder. His trial is set to begin in 2012.
